The Putnam Herald
A local amateur photographer is in the running to win a national contest.
Troy Lilly, who grew up in Hurricane and now lives in Cross Lanes, submitted a photo of West Virginia's Elakala Waterfalls of Blackwater Falls State Park to the Hilton HHonors Stories Without Words Photo Contest.
More than 7,000 images were received. Judges narrowed it down to the top two finalists in five categories -- occasions you celebrate, people you meet, the adventures you seek, the culture you learn and the spaces you discover (which is Lilly's category).

The Secret Place
A hidden waterfall enlightened by heavenly beams divine. Everyone needs a secret place to get alone and consider the very most important areas of life and our existence. Often the cares and concerns of this life distract our frail minds from the truths of our eternal destiny. Where is your "Secret Place"? Although you may not always be able to retreat to a different circumstance or location there is a secret place given from above that is available to all who will enter. Vibrant Fall Foliage Colors abound across the hill tops from the highland scenic highway in West Virginia at the evening sunset. This view is from the far side of route 150 of the Highland Scenic Highway. This is one of the most beautiful, pristine and uncrowded places to visit nature in West Virginia. Some days you can set for hours and not see one car drive by out here.

A scenic country farm late in the evening under a country sky. Country wild flowers in front of an old barbed wire fence. The barns in the distant field give this picture a down home country look.
